Ovechkin To Break Gretzky's All-Time Goal Scoring Record?

Recommended Posts

What's amazing is that Jaromir Jagr has 765 goals, which is only 129 goals less than Gretzky had.  If he had not taken away so many years from the NHL to play overseas, he might be able to catch Gretzky's record if he were to play this season.

Still puzzled at his decision to play in the Europe and KHL. Must've been a lot of money and he's a known gambler.

Wow, he has 8 goals in only the first 4 games of the season!  Yeah, I'd say he has a real good chance at breaking Gretzky's goal-scoring record.  Does not seem like he's slowing down at all.   In fact, maybe what happened with him is what happens with a lot of athletes as they age.  They end up eating much healthier and stretching/exercising much more the older they get, to stay at a high-level.  So, maybe he'll play even better this year than ever before.  Should be fun to see what happens.

Ovechkin plays a far more rough and tumble game than Gretzy ever did.  Injury and age would be factors in breaking Gretzy’s goal record.  Personally, I think it’s a long shot.  Everything will need to go just right for him to have a chance.

Yeah, hopefully he does not get injured.  That's 9 goals now.  Scored another 1 last night.  If he has an awesome season this year, he could very well be on his way to breaking the record--especially if he follows it up with another awesome season next year.  We shall see.

Ugh. Why. Did you have to mention that. I thought the Ducks, as a team, had that many goals. I looked up it up. It's not quite that bad but not much better at 11.

That's depressing. When a single player is almost out scoring a team.

When I created this thread 4 years ago, Alex Ovechkin had 414 goals, and was 481 goals away from breaking Gretzky's goal-scoring record.  Four seasons later, he now has 607 goals!  So, in the 4 seasons since this thread was made, Ovechkin has scored 185 goals--unreal!  Just finished another season with around 50 goals.  (49, to be exact.)  And he is now only 288 goals from breaking Wayne Gretzky's record.  No, really!  He is only 288 goals away from breaking Wayne Gretzky's all-time goal scoring record!  Guys, I truly believe he is going to break this record!  Is there anybody here who truly believes he cannot play until he is 40 years old?  Of course not.  Check this out.  This is pretty amazing.  He will be 33 years old when the next season starts.  So, let's just say he retires after 8 more seasons, when he is 40 years old.  Is there anybody here who does not believe Ovechkin can score at least 36 goals for the next 8 seasons?  I doubt it.  Well, what is 36 multiplied by 8?  288!  Crazy, huh!  If Ovechkin only scores 36 goals for the next 8 seasons, he breaks Gretzky's record!  And if, for whatever reason, he needs a few more seasons past the age of 40 to break the record, there is no reason to believe he cannot still be a productive player in this league past the age of 40.  Also, to put it into perspective, Teemu Selanne came back to the Ducks at age 35 and ended up scoring a total of 232 goals in 9 seasons, including 40 goals at age 35 and 48 goals at age 36!  I think this is going to happen!  Let's keep in mind that Ovechkin has averaged 50 goals in 3 of the last 4 seasons.  He is not showing any signs of slowing down.  I would not be surprised if he has at least 2 more seasons in him, if not more, where he scores at least 50 goals.  I also believe he will be the first player in NHL history to reach 900 goals in his career!  It's always fun to see how much closer he is to breaking Gretzky's record after the regular season has ended.  When I first made this thread 4 years ago, who could have imagined that he would average 50 goals in 3 of the next 4 seasons.  Pretty cool!  I am really hoping he stays healthy these next 8 seasons.  If so, will be very cool to see somebody break a goal scoring record.  Maybe I'll even try and be there in person when he does it.  Ok, well, will be interesting to see how much closer Ovechkin is to breaking the goal scoring record a year from today.  Until then...GO DUCKS! :)

Well a lot would have to happen to make it possible. It's unlikely but not impossible I guess. He shows no signs of slowing down but the way he plays is taxing on the body. Who knows when the dropoff comes?

Thanks for bumping this thread, Duck123. I got to see the above post again. Those were some dark days early in the season. And somehow the team still finishes with home ice for the playoffs! Hahahahaha

I think he will have some fall off. He'll need a couple more 45~50 goal seasons so that he can get it done with 25~35 his last three or four seasons. Not impossible, but not yet guaranteed.

P.s. is that regular season only or regular season and playoffs combined?

I think he'll do it! Legs seem to go before hands...in his late 30s/early 40s he could become a power play specialist...and wouldn't be surprised to see him get 10 - 20 goals in those years.

Let's just say he plays 10 more seasons...till he's 42...would this be impossible you think?

Age 33: 50

Age 34: 45

Age 35: 43

Age 36: 36

Age 37: 30

Age 38: 25

Age 39: 20

Age 40: 15

Age 41: 15

Age 42: 10

Total: 896...I dunno...I don't think it's impossible!

Mario was better.

Yep.  Gretzky has to get credit for the ridiculous numbers he put up, and I hate to ding Lemieux for the unfortunate health problems he had, but in overall production Gretzky wins.  That said, Gretzky came along and took advantage to the full extent of an era where scoring was at an all-time high and he figured out how to beat goalies.  It wasn't gimmicky by any stretch, and he deserves complete credit, but I don't think he would have been nearly as dominant in today's game.

Lemieux, on the other hand, could do things with his size and strength and hands that no other human could do.  On sheer hockey talent, I think Lemieux wins.

AGREE - not even close. Ovi will have some physical breakdowns as he gets older. He REALLLY taxes his body !!!

True IF he had not choose the Euro League path maybe he would be close to the Great One's Record.

Very true! Same could be said about Ovi...as far as what if there wasn't a half season in 2013...AND what if there was a 2004-05 season? Would THAT have been his rookie year? I'm guessing so. You could almost make the case he'd have another 70 goals to his at this point.

I'm just claiming I think there is a good chance Ovi will beat Gretzky's all-time regular season goal scoring record--separate from playoffs.

Funny. I was saying over 4 years ago, when I wrote this thread, that I think Ovechkin would break Gretzky's all-time goal scoring record.  Check out this article:

https://www.nhl.com/news/alex-ovechkin-has-chance-to-catch-wayne-gretzky/c-303113638

The way he's producing this year it is indeed very promising that he can beat the record. Just stay on a good team when the deal runs out in two years, most likely remain in WSH, and he can average 30 goals a year for 5 seasons, then it's all about luck. You don't beat such a record without a lot of luck.

I for one certainly hope he breaks the record.  He is a special player who actually plays a physical contact game....I hope the league doesn't figure a way to screw him out of the opportunity, by suddenly deciding to make the nets smaller, or by suspending Russian players who exceed 800 goals (sarcasm intended).

They could easily do anything judging by Cogliano <_<

Pff. Ovi is safe. The guy has been jumping out of his skates and making borderline hits his entire career. If anything, if he his suspeneded, Parros will have a Russian contingent in his office the next day. I can assure you Parros, can not fight his way out of that.

Well, he's done it again! Alexander Ovechkin has scored at least 50 goals again this season--with 51!  When I first started this thread in March of 2014 (Over 5 years ago now!), Ovechkin was 481 goals away from breaking Wayne Gretzky's goal scoring record. Now? With 658 goals, Ovechkin is only 237 goals away from breaking Gretzky's record! That's less than half of what he needed when this thread first started!

Yes, I know that 237 goals is a lot of goals to still need to score. But let's remember Ovechkin is still only 33 years old. He turns 34 in September. Does he look like he is slowing down any time soon? Nope! Does anybody doubt he can have another 50-goal campaign next season? I don't. In fact, check this out. He just needs four more 50-goal seasons in a row. So, from ages 34-37, he needs four more 50-goal seasons. Then, all he would need is one final season of 37 goals, and he breaks Gretzky's record!  So, if he scores 50 goals in each of the next four seasons, and scores 37 goals in the fifth season from now, he breaks Gretzky's record! I believe Ovechkin will break Gretzky's goal-scoring record, barring any long-term injury.

Let's remember how many goals Selanne scored when he returned to the Ducks at 35 years old. He scored 40 goals as a 35-year-old, and then 48 goals as a 36 year old. You've got to think Ovechkin knows Gretzky's record is within reach. And you better believe if he scores another 50 goals next season, scoring 50 in the following 3 seasons will be just as easy because his motivation will become stronger and stronger--knowing he is so close to breaking the record. Pretty amazing, isn't it, that all Ovechkin needs to do is have four more seasons with 50 goals, a fifth season with 37 goals, and then he can retire at age 38 years old with the all-time goal-scoring record? Pretty cool, if you ask me. And my suspicion is that he will be the first player ever to 900 goals.

It's been cool knowing how many goals Ovechkin has scored these past 5 years since the thread has been created.  And it will be cool to see if he scores enough goals these next five years to break Gretzky's all-time goal scoring record!

As long as he doesn't get injured I think he can do it. But I think it will take another six or seven seasons. Even then it's going to take a concerted effort by players around him to feed him the puck. And as he gets closer I think other teams will naturally key on him to keep him from scoring. He succeeds now because that one timer he has is so fast, strong and accurate. At 33 he is in his prime. Over the next several years his reaction time is going to suffer. Unlike Selanne or Gretzky, he does not have very adept hands. You don't see him scoring many goals via his agility. But I do believe he can break the record at this point. Lets check back in two years and see where he is then. 😎
