Ovechkin To Break Gretzky's All-Time Goal Scoring Record?

I'm very much on board! Man...could you imagine if there weren't the 2 lockouts...he'd probably have another 70ish goals......

He also didn’t come to the NHL until he was 20. Gretzky started at 18 years old.

Yeah, it’s a shame. I still think he goes down as the greatest goal scorer in history even if he doesn’t pass Gretzky.

I hope not.....

I mean, he was on pace for another 9 goals this season...who knows what happens next season. But without the lockouts...he could easily have another....75 goals. That would put him at 84 more goals he could have had...  that would put him at 790 goals right now....

I think (hope) he'll just continue to play...and basically become a power play specialist...unless it just becomes too out of reach. But if he's feeling even at 50% and he's within 30....I think he pushes through.

Update: Alex Ovechkin now has 730 goals! Even in the shortened season, he was just able to score 24 goals in 45 games! Keeps his chances of breaking Gretzky's record alive! Gretzky scored 894 goals in his career, and so Ovechkin is only 165 goals away from breaking the record. And he will only be 36 years old this upcoming season. Want to hear something crazy? He can break the record at 40 years old by simply scoring 33 goals the next 5 seasons! And I see no reason why he won't have at least another season or two with at least 50 goals. No reason he can't be the first player to 900 goals! I think it's actually more realistic than not now that he breaks the record. After all, who doubts he will score at least 33 goals the next 5 seasons? And if he wanted to, he could retire at 40 with the goal scoring record. But let's just say he breaks the record at 40 years old, and at 41 knows all he has to do is have 3 more seasons with at least 33 goals and he can get to 1,000 goals! (Assuming he's already at 900 goals by 41 years old.) In that case, we might see him play until at least 43 and get to 1,000 goals! Will be fun to see how it all turns out. By the way, hope you all have been well! It's been a while since I've made a comment or post on these boards. Lol. Have a good one, all. Peace.

He's proven to still be an effective goal scorer. Even if he slows down over the next few years he could get there like this:

2021-2022: 40 goals

2022-2023: 40 goals

2023-2024: 30 goals

2024-2025: 30 goals

2025-2026: 25 goals

Obviously that means he would still need to score at a near-elite level for another couple of seasons. Also he would have to stay healthy which is tougher to do the older you get.

He won't get to 1000 though, that's a bridge too far I think. He would have probably gotten there were it not for the multiple lockouts and shortened season during his career.

yeaaah....worried about staying healthy but more worried about more shortened seasons 😕 ...i think I did the math at some point and it was like...80ish more goals he would have without lockouts or shortened seasons....ugh

Definitely think he can have at least a few more seasons with at least 40 goals. Should be fun to see how it all plays out. Just hope he doesn't decide to randomly retire in a couple years and move back to Russia, before breaking the record.
