Teams protecting a lottery pick makes sense. I’m just amazed at the return the Sens got and then realizing who our GM and then losing hope that we could pull something like that off.

i wonder what it feels like to fleece a team in a trade lol

Gudbranson for Martinsen + 7th rounder doesn’t count?

No.  Pageau is actually good.

If Gudbranson continues to play the way he's played, we'll have done fine in getting a player who's only somewhat overpaid.  He's useful to the team.  But you can't fleece anyone when you pick up a mediocre, overpaid player, even if you really don't give anything up in return.

gorb is only satisfied if we get auston matthews for two second round picks in 2030 AND a promise he'll shave his porn stache on the plane ride over.

He’s been arguably our second best D-man this season (considering how poorly Hampus has played this season). Everyone sees this but you. He’s not worth his top-pair salary (yet) but he’s rejuvenated his career in Anaheim.

If you can get a solid #3 D-man for a 7th and a nobody, you’ve fleeced your trade partner. People here want 1st rounders for Manson, who frankly isn’t even as good as Gudbranson anymore.

"Been arguably our second best D-man this season" is the virtual definition of damning with faint praise.  He's not good, despite a half season sample where he's been fine for a middle pairing d-man.  I think he'd make a pretty good third pairing guy, so if we can move him down to those minutes, I'm all about it, despite his salary.

Damn. The Senators just got a 1st, 2nd and 3rd got Pageau. Amazing return.

This trade makes way more sense now that Pageau has signed a 6 year extension with the Isles, which must have been worked out before the trade was agreed to. So its basically a 1st and a 2nd (the 3rd only transfers if the Isles win the Cup this year) for 6 years of JG Pageau, who has 24G/16A in 60 games this season. That's a good return for Ottawa, but they are basically lucking out that the Isles were able to lock up JGP long term rather than having him be a pure rental. If he decides to go UFA on July 1st this season, three's no way the Isles send that package to Ottawa for JGP.

You're right. I posted about the trade and they had not announced his extension, which they did seemingly an hour later. In that context, the return does make a lot more sense and Ottawa did as well as they possibly could have. It's crazy how Ottawa went from game 7 of the ECF in 2017, to a dumpster fire trading away pretty much every good player on their roster, losing the 4th overall picks last year and now to possibly having two lottery picks this year and primed to set themselves up amazingly well for the future.

Athletic had a nice article on prospects, and included Andersson, who was part of the return on this trade.  They are fairly high on him as an RHD prospect, claiming he was only buried due to Boston's depth in that position.

Hopefully that's a sneaky Easter egg we can enjoy in a few years.
